Chapter-13

Mellissa woke up with a terrifying thought – only a day was left until she or Jennifer got murdered by their blackmailer as per the note. She got dressed and checked her phone. It had scratch marks all around the back of it. She understood at once. Her mother was going to track her again with that bloody chip of hers. This happened years ago because Mellissa was suffering from schizophrenia, which increased quite significantly during that time. She made up her mind, she was going to ask Jennifer about this.

“Mom, why are scratch marks there behind my phone? They weren’t there yesterday. Are you trying to track me with that chip of yours again?” questioned Mellissa.

“No sweetie. Not again, never.” Replied Jennifer.

Seeing Jennifer’s body language and panic-stricken face, Mellissa knew that her mother had planted the chip again and something was so very wrong. The worry was visible on Jennifer’s face.

“Mom, I know you’re worried about something. Tell me what it is. Is it related to that note?” inquired Mellissa.

This question startled Jennifer. There was panic in her voice now.

“Nothing, nothing. J-just, the-the cat, Mr. and Mrs. Crawford’s cat came,” Jennifer stuttered, she laughed hysterically, “I shooed her away as usual.”

This sounded very unconvincing to Mellissa so she thought of interrogating her mother again.

“All doors and windows of this house were locked properly by me last night Mom. That cat couldn’t’ve come in or else an irritating siren would have played.” Counter-argued Mellissa.

“Ok. Ok. This is something linked to the blackmail note we received. The blackmailer called me today, in the morning to tell me that there is- “only a day left”- they said in unison.

“So, either I confess my crime or one of us is going to die tomorrow.” Jennifer continued.

“What crime? You are a lawyer; how could you have a criminal record?” said Mellissa.

“I don’t know. I didn’t commit a crime.” Lied Jennifer.

“I know mom, I trust you.” Mellissa told Jennifer.

“I am sorry Millie but I can’t tell you more than this half-truth.” Thought Jennifer.

Jennifer knew about the crime she committed. She knew she would have to hide this from her daughter because if Millie got a hint of this, she would be heartbroken and wouldn’t speak to her mother ever again. When everything was getting back to normal, someone had to ruin their lives.

“Ok, Mom, take care of yourself and I will be back before you know it.” Said Millie.

“You too. Drive safely to school and back.” Said Jennifer.

Jennifer was lying on the sofa. Devouring a bag of crisps. She was checking her phone every 5 min. She was waiting for someone to call, to message. At last, at 4 pm, she called the unknown number that the blackmailer had used. The same person answered.

“Wow, you freaked me out. Nice acting.” Jennifer told the person.

“Thanks.” The blackmailer said in his natural voice.

“Carry it out safely tomorrow. Nobody should see you.” Ordered Jennifer.

“OK, mother. Are you sure you want to do this?” the blackmailer asked.

“Yes, I am not waiting any longer to do this!” Replied Jennifer with a sinister smile curling up on her face.
